Quick Fix Guide 08 ยท Slow computer
The computer is suddenly slow.
A slow computer is not always a dying computer. First we check whether something is stuck, updating, or quietly asking for attention.
What is probably happening
Too many apps are open, the computer needs a restart, storage is nearly full, or an update is waiting.
What to try first.
- Save your work, then restart the computer.
- Close apps you are not using, especially ones that open at the top of the screen or near the clock.
- Check storage. If it is almost full, delete or move large files you recognize.
- Run system updates from Settings, then restart again.
What Emily writes back
Hi Mary,
A slow computer is not always a dying computer. It may be stuck finishing an update, running too many things, or nearly out of space.
Try this first:
- Save your work and restart the computer.
- Close apps you are not using.
- Check storage and only delete large files you recognize.
Do not download a speed-up tool from a pop-up. Those often make the problem worse.

What to send Lumaneta.
Short and plain is fine. Do not send passwords, one-time codes, card numbers, Social Security numbers, or private banking details.
- Mac or Windows.
